Why McMillan

McMillan Equine Feeds have worked alongside veterinary professionals to develop nutritional products most appropriate for all horses from foals to yearlings, racehorses and sports and leisure horses.

There are a number of nutritional considerations or concerns, some which correctly balanced compounded feeds can address and some which only the owner can address under advice from the feed supplier. These include:

  • Horses are grazing herbivores and arenot well adapted to high levels of grain feeding and low intake of bulky forage which is typical feed for horses in work. Starch overload leads to acidosis due to insufficient enzyme supply. Undigested starch entering the large intestine produces undesirable lactic acid and toxins leading to founder, colic and scouring.
  • Infrequent feeding of stabled horsespromotes stomach ulcers due to a lack of acid buffering saliva, the production of which is stimulated by chewing. Providing grazing or hay at all times and at more frequent small concentrated feeds will help prevent ulcers.
  • Unbalanced nutrient intake can leadto growth, reproductive and health disorders. Energy intake should match work output. Excess protein in adult horses overloads the kidneys and an excess of phosphorus over calcium will lead to skeletal and metabolic disorders.
  • Nutrient availability can be enhancedby grain processing, yeast cultures and enzymes and organically-bound trace minerals will be more effective than inorganic sources.

Where possible McMillan Equine Feeds attempts to address these concerns through correct formulation, feed processing and dietary additives. The horse owner must also play their part by following the feeding directions.

To effectively implement a balanced feeding programme, the horse owner needs to know the liveweight of the horse and the weight, not volume, of the feed being offered. Volume weight (grams per litre) of mixed feed and grains can vary widely. Check weigh the contents of full dippers and measures with each new batch of feed and grain.

We understand that one horse feed will not meet the nutritional requirements for horses at different stages of growth and development, or at different performance levels. By applying rigorous quality control standards to both ingredients and finished products, McMillans Equine Feeds has achieved a consistency and quality that is the envy of the industry.

McMillans is a range of formulated feeds and supplements specifically designed for horses. The range includes a number of feeds well-matched to the demands of thoroughbred and standardbred horses. A number of New Zealand trainers exclusively use the McMillan Equine range. These particular feeds have been designed for high energy to maximise racing potential during the season. There are also a number of feeds more suited to pregnant mares, newborn and rising foals, and for reconditioning. A number of these are perfect for maintaining horses and ponies in prime condition. McMillan Equine Feeds are available from all CRT FarmCentres and the CRT FeedBarn. McMillan Equine Feeds is proud to have long-standing associations with a number of top New Zealand trainers and are proud supporters of A & P shows and local equine events.

McMillan Equine Feeds is a brand of CRT Feed. All barley, pulses and wheat are sourced locally, from CRT shareholders right here in New Zealand.
