Livestock Update

It's a new year, and we're all hoping that the positive returns enjoyed by all agricultural sectors over the past months continue long into 2012.

As we look ahead at the farming calendar for 2012, some consideration must be given to the best way to generate cashflow over the colder months. Careful forward planning now is vital to secure quality stock at the upcoming sales and solid dairy grazing contracts.

Calf sales are only weeks away and represent a good option for properties not suited to dairy grazing. CRT can provide simple and competitive finance packages to help any shareholder purchase calves. Store lambs will become harder to get in the coming weeks, so now is the time to proactively purchase while there is still a good choice of breeds, sex and weights.

Dairy grazing options are also available from CRT, but forward contracts should be signed as a commitment in order to avoid being let down if we have a mild winter, or if another farmer offers grazing at a lesser rate. There is too much money involved in planting of specialist winter feed crops to do a deal on a hand shake.

For all your livestock trading or finance enquiries please contact your local CRT livestock representative.

Dairy Diary - Canterbury update

Summer is well upon us, and mating has come and gone. Now is the time to check to see if early pregnancy tests are favourable.

Bull and cow schedules should still be strong, and CRT have a wide range of culling options available for your bulls and cull cows.

There is strong demand for young recorded empties again this year, as well as R1 heifers for the export market and yearling Jersey bulls.

Cow and heifer prices remain firm, and some have been fetching between $1800 and $2600. In-calf heifers are going for $1300 to $2000, depending on recording and quality. Supply is generally meeting demand, although there is a possibility that in-calf heifer availability will be down due to the large numbers of heifers being supplied to the export market.

While CRT have dairy cattle on quote throughout the South Island, we also rely on the North Island to meet client needs. When buying out of the North Island using your CRT agent, you can be certain that someone is working hard for you and making sure your needs are met, while ensuring that a sound contract is drawn up.

Despite the best intentions of selling agents, the reality is they are working for the vendor, which means they are generally considering their interests and not the buyers.

By forging strong working relationships with agents in the North Island, and using key people and modern technology, CRT have been able to narrow down the lines of dairy cattle to meet shareholder requirements. These relationships mean that buyers save valuable time and money because their CRT livestock agent knows what stock is suitable to be viewed, and what will meet their needs.

Contact your CRT livestock representative if you have any enquiries. Happy summer days.
